Having played their first ever game on May 1, 1883, the Philadelphia Phillies ended up losing the game to the Providence Grays 4-3. Thus started a stroke of bad luck, and hereafter they lost eighty-one of the ninety-eight games they played, an indication of what the future held in store for them. Even the entry of the 'Hall of Famer,' Harry Wright, could not turn the team around for the next ten years. Wright, then made a bid to add great talent; starting with Ed Delahanty or "Big Ed" who won a batting title, as well as hit four home runs in 1896. However, things soon changed once the American League signed away their three biggest stars - Delahanty, Elmer Flick and Nap Lajoie - all of whom were destined to be future Hall of Famers. One of the greatest of all pitchers, he went on to win twenty-eight games as a rookie in 1911. In fact, he averaged twenty-seven wins in his seven years with Phillies, winning thirty-plus games three times and twenty-plus games each year except for 1912, when he won only nineteen games. Nevertheless, the Phillies had now made their mark and all their fans wanted to look savvy at the games in their team's merchandise.
